Novak Djokovic's struggles continue with Indian Wells defeat

Roger Federer

World number one Roger Federer reached the last 16 of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells with a comfortable victory over Serbia's Filip Krajinovic.

Both Djokovic and Edmund were making their first appearances since the Australian Open. Djokovic even admitted that he lacked rhythm in the game.

Djokovic shut down his season after Wimbledon in 2017 and despite not being at his best, made a decision to play at this year's Australian Open where he was ousted by South Korea's Hyeon Chung in the fourth round.

"I just completely lost rhythm, everything", a candid Djokovic told press.

He was uncharacteristically sloppy - as in 40 unforced errors sloppy.

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all".

The Serb failed to serve out the first set, growing the internal seed of doubt and emboldening Daniel, who at last year's US Open took a set from eventual champion Rafael Daniel.

The match was suspended due to rain at 2230 local time poised with the second set tied at 2-2, and no further play was possible. "You don't have pain, but you're still thinking about it". After handing back an early break to allow Krajinovic to draw level at 2-all, the defending champion moved into cruise control.

Wozniacki outlasted Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 for her 31st career match win at Indian Wells, where she has played 12 straight years.

The tournament also lost Japan's Kei Nishikori, who withdrew through illness.

But World No 5 Alexander Zverev is out, having lost a two hour, 23 minute marathon to the 85th-ranked Joao Sousa of Portugal.

Federer, who won 17 successive points during the match against his Serbian opponent, added: "I was playing aggressive and feeling like he was not loving my slice, and then also mixing in with drop shots eventually".

In other third-round matches, No. 7 Caroline Garcia of France beat 26th-seeded Daria Gavrilova of Australia 7-5, 6-4; No. 10 Angelique Kerber of Germany defeated No. 24 Elena Vesnina of Russian Federation 7-5, 6-2; and American Danielle Collins continued her run with a 6-4, 6-4 win over fellow wild card Sofya Zhuk of Russian Federation.

He will now play against another American, Jack Sock, who beat Italy's Thomas Fabbiano 6-2, 7-5.
