Netanyahu's coalition survives after days of political brinksmanship

The free vote allowed the party of Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who strongly opposes the exemption, to vote against the legislation.

While Pence's announcement echoed President Trump's declaration that he had re-certified the deal in January "for the last time", the president later set a deadline of May 12 for negotiations between the U.S. and the "European Three" (the UK, France and Germany) in hopes of securing a better deal, though Iranian leaders have adamantly declared that they won't accept any modifications to the original deal.

"I call on all the coalition partners, first and foremost Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, to remain in the government and to continue this partnership in order to guarantee security, prosperity and stability for the State of Israel", the prime minister said.

The leadership of Yisrael Beiteinu, a secular conservative party, announced that they would vote against the bill that was hashed out by their coalition partners of Likud (Netanyahu's party) and the religious United Torah Judaism (UTJ).

Smelling blood in the water, opposition party leaders have also refused to support the bill in the hopes of dissolving Netanyahu's coalition and gaining ground in a snap election.

Though Netanyahu's legal woes hang over the discussions, the dispute within the coalition centers on a separate issue entirely: legislation to exempt young ultra-Orthodox Jewish men from military conscription. "Freedom, innovation, informality", Netanyahu said. However, according to Tuesday's deal, ministers will request that the prime minister not fire her and guarantee it was a one-time incident.

After coalition talks on Sunday, Netanyahu's office said cabinet ministers were waiting for ultra-Orthodox parties, which control 13 of the government's 66 seats in the 120-member parliament, to present a revised formula for the legislation.

In his speech, Netanyahu made no mention of the scandals, but said he had no fears of holding a new election.

Their demand has run up against Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon's requirement that the budget is passed before the end of parliament's current term on March 18.

Lieberman has stuck to his position of opposing the conscription bill, but says he will not quit the government over it for now. Recent polls show the allegations against Netanyahu have not diminished support for his Likud party.

Netanyahu has however signalled that he does not want to do so, calling it unsustainable.

Netanyahu could call for early elections, both as a way to shore up his narrow coalition and affirm his public standing in the face of multiple corruption charges. He has been prime minister for a total of 12 years, from 1996-1999 and again since 2009.

Investigators last month recommended to prosecutors that Netanyahu be indicted in at least two corruption cases against him.
