Naresh Agarwal joins BJP after SP denies Rajya Sabha ticket

Rajya Sabha polls BJP Congress RJD TRS JD-U announce candidates

By fielding more than eight candidates, the BJP has also potentially queered the pitch for Mayawati's BSP, which hopes to put one member in the Rajya Sabha with the help of the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, in a coming together that is seen to test an alliance ahead of national elections next year. There were already murmurs of Agarwal "colluding" with the BJP since January. "I do not want a ticket to Rajya Sabha", said Agrawal on joining the BJP. I found it not proper.

Agrawal, who has courted controversies in the past too over his statements, made the remarks in the presence BJP leaders, including Union minister Piyush Goyal, at a press conference held at the party headquarters here to announce his joining the BJP.

In a major setback to the Samajwadi Party, its senior leader Naresh Agarwal on Monday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - a day after Jaya Bachchan was favoured over him for renomination to the Rajya Sabha.

He further said he would always respect Mulayam Singh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav, but was upset at being bypassed by the SP for nomination to the Rajya Sabha. As per reports, he was miffed over being ignored for his nomination to the Upper House.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has tweeted about Naresh Agarwal's induction into the party. "He is welcome, but his comments regarding Jaya Bachhan are improper and unacceptable". Agarwal said he's influenced by PM Narendra Modi and UP CM Yogi Adityanath.

Agarwal has been Member of the Legislative Assembly from Hardoi constituency for seven terms. He was elected again in 2012 from Samajwadi Party. Agarwal also had a meeting with the Senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
