The campaign tactics also come as Republicans go all-in for this special election contest in a district Trump won by 20 points in 2016 and won't exist in the November election because of redistricting.

Trump contrasted Saccone's support for his agenda with his Democratic opponent Conor Lamb saying he is acting "like a Republican" but "won't give me a single vote".

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a pro-Republican super PAC, also has highlighted the issue, which is in the national spotlight after Florida passed new school safety rules and President Donald Trump laid out his support for legislation now being considered by Congress, which includes improving background checks and providing grants to states for anti-school-violence plans.

"My family is pretty right - we live in a pretty conservative part of Pennsylvania", Harrison said. And the race couldn't be tighter, a warning sign for the GOP no matter who wins given the deeply populist-conservative nature of Pittsburgh's suburbs and exurbs.

Saccone, has received almost $10.3 million support from super PACs and outside groups, including $3.3 million from the House-aligned super-PAC called the Congressional Leadership Fund and $3.5 million from the official election arm of the House Republican conference.

Still, Democrats want to use the race as another way to needle Trump.

Whoever emerges victorious in the special will likely have to fight hard to keep his seat in the regularly scheduled November 2018 election. Other recent polls have shown the race as being similarly close. "It's clear people want an alternative to Trump".

"This is the kind of election where even turning out an extra 2,000 voters who are young could actually make a difference", Ginsberg said.

Unlike failed Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, Saccone doesn't have any unsavory allegations from his past (that we know of).

One percent of voters polled support a third-party candidate, while 3 percent remain undecided.

Republicans have been hoping that the passage of their massive tax cuts and the climbing stock market numbers would help override some of Trump's low popularity numbers.

The Republican argument is enough for voters like 54-year-old Jeffrey Snelling. "He's progun, he's protariff, he's pro-Trump essentially, " she said.

Groups supporting GOP candidates have spent more than $10 million on the race, according to published reports. Democratic groups spent only $855,591.
