More trouble for Trump's candidate in Pennsylvania special election

"I was really down after the presidential election, but Conor has me totally enthusiastic again ... his youth, his energy, his ideas", said Patricia Bancroft, 62, a new retiree who says Lamb is the first political candidate she's ever volunteered for.

Republicans, meanwhile, would be spooked about their prospects in this tempestuous era of Trump, who most recently visited Saturday night on Saccone's behalf.

Lamb's campaign has inspired Democrats' core supporters. "The scary thing for vulnerable House Republicans this year is that neither the National Republican Congressional Committee nor [aligned super PAC] seem to have any clue what to do about it", Tyler Law, spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee told ABC News in an email. He added that Lamb's party leadership opposes his protectionist policy. "It makes him look as if he's on the cutting edge of a new generations of politicians". Lamb, in return, called Moulton "a good friend" and a key source of support. "He has helped me in this campaign from the very beginning".

The campaign tactics also come as Republicans go all-in for this special election contest in a district Trump won by 20 points in 2016 and won't exist in the November election because of redistricting.

Trump contrasted Saccone's support for his agenda with his Democratic opponent Conor Lamb saying he is acting "like a Republican" but "won't give me a single vote".

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a pro-Republican super PAC, also has highlighted the issue, which is in the national spotlight after Florida passed new school safety rules and President Donald Trump laid out his support for legislation now being considered by Congress, which includes improving background checks and providing grants to states for anti-school-violence plans.

"My family is pretty right - we live in a pretty conservative part of Pennsylvania", Harrison said. And the race couldn't be tighter, a warning sign for the GOP no matter who wins given the deeply populist-conservative nature of Pittsburgh's suburbs and exurbs.

Saccone, has received almost $10.3 million support from super PACs and outside groups, including $3.3 million from the House-aligned super-PAC called the Congressional Leadership Fund and $3.5 million from the official election arm of the House Republican conference.

Still, Democrats want to use the race as another way to needle Trump.

Whoever emerges victorious in the special will likely have to fight hard to keep his seat in the regularly scheduled November 2018 election. Other recent polls have shown the race as being similarly close. "It's clear people want an alternative to Trump".

"This is the kind of election where even turning out an extra 2,000 voters who are young could actually make a difference", Ginsberg said.

Unlike failed Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, Saccone doesn't have any unsavory allegations from his past (that we know of).

One percent of voters polled support a third-party candidate, while 3 percent remain undecided.

He has been considered by some to be a test case of Moulton's brand of antiestablishment rhetoric.

Can Democrats compete in Republican districts they need to recapture the House? Vice President Joe Biden, who was born in Scranton, has campaigned with him.

"They represent the extreme left of the Democratic Party", he said.

Saccone, for his part, has decided that embracing Trump wholeheartedly is his best political strategy. However, the race appears to have tightened. He also has a military background, having served in the Air Force.

Trump claimed many steel mills are now opening up because of his decision.

If he loses, it could foreshadow what is already expected to be a hard midterm election cycle for Republicans.

Monmouth University used three different turnout models ahead of Tuesday's special election -and Lamb has the advantage in all three of them.

Republicans have been hoping that the passage of their massive tax cuts and the climbing stock market numbers would help override some of Trump's low popularity numbers.

The Republican argument is enough for voters like 54-year-old Jeffrey Snelling. "He's progun, he's protariff, he's pro-Trump essentially, " she said.

Groups supporting GOP candidates have spent more than $10 million on the race, according to published reports. Democratic groups spent only $855,591.
