'Millennials' railcard for 26-30s launches trial period

How and when to apply for the Millennial railcard- you will have to be quick

In the last Budget in November, the Chancellor announced a new railcard that would offer cash-strapped millennials up to a third off rail fares.

HEAVY traffic from young travellers trying to buy the new 26-30 railcard has caused its website to crash. This did not go down well with the people, who took to Twitter to voice their displeasure.

A statement released on the National Railcards official Twitter account said: "We've had an unprecedented number of people visiting our site for the 26-30 Railcard. Sort out your website to make it fair!' Others said it's worse than 'waiting in the Ticketmaster queue".

Tom Drury, from London, wrote: "The launch of the new railcard is a shambles".

There was previously no nationwide railcard available for people between the ages of 26 and 59 travelling alone unless they were disabled or in the armed forces.

Here is all the information on the 26-30 railcards including how and where to buy them, who's eligible and how many are available.

The government plans to eventually have the railcard be available for anyone aged 26-30, although there are only 10,000 for purchase today.

It costs £30 each year and saves passengers a third off most fares.

However, it's not good news for everyone, as the railcard can not be used on season tickets, which many working and commuting young people buy to make daily travel to work slightly cheaper. However, the website was still down as of 2pm on 13th March.

The card is meant to be used on a smartphone, but if you lose your phone or your phone dies you can transfer the card to another phone online.

However, 90 minutes later it was still impossible to buy the coveted card online. "This 26-30 railcard could save me £1000s".

This is slightly more nuanced than it first appears.

If you're approved, your new railcard will be available instantly.

As The Independent revealed on 11 March, the first batch of railcards available to anyone in the United Kingdom born between 14 March 1987 and 13 March 1992 was due to be released on 13 March.

More millennial railcards are expected to be released in due course, but by then it will be too late for those on the cusp of turning 31.
