Miley Cyrus sued for $300 million over 'We Can't Stop' copyright infringement

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is being accused of stealing from a Caribbean songwriter for her hit "We Can't Stop" and he wants a court order prohibiting her from continuing to profit off the infringing song.

He also insisted that around 50 per cent of We Can't Stop came from him, with him accusing Cyrus and her label RCA Records of "misappropriating his material".

Compare Cyrus' We Can't Stop above to Flourgon's We Run Things below. Things no run we", which she sings as "We run things.

One of the biggest names in dancehall during the 1980s, Flourgon made a name with songs like We Run Things, Bounce, Big Batty Gal and Love Mi Lover Bad. He says that Cyrus' song imitates "We Run Things"' "overarching message of defiance", as well as "substantially incorporat [es]" aspects of May's vocal style and rhythms. "Things don't run we".

The 25-year-old singer - whose single hit the number one spot in the United Kingdom when it was released in 2013 - has been accused of stealing the track by a Jamaican musician, who is seeking to stop all further performances and sales. May also said in the lawsuit that Cyrus' single "owes the basis of its chart-topping popularity ... and its highly lucrative success to May's protected, unique, creative and original content".

May is seeking a trial by jury, plus a halt to sales and performances of Cyrus' song as well as damages and legal fees. Listen to both songs below and judge the alleged similarities for yourself.
