Migrants clash with riot police after death of street vendor in Madrid

Street clashes erupt in Madrid after street vendor's death

They set fire to dustbins and a motorcycle, and threw stones at security forces in Lavapies, a district in the centre of the Spanish capital with a large immigrant population.

Around 200 people gathered in the Lavapies district following eyewitness reports that claimed Mamme Mbage, a 35-year-old man from Senegal, died of a cardiorespiratory arrest after trying to escape from police, El Pais newspaper said.

One resident, who gave his name only as Marcos, told AP that earlier in the day he saw police on foot and on motorbikes pursuing a group of African street vendors.

Illegal street sellers, many of them African migrants, are a common sight in Madrid and other Spanish cities.

When Mbaye suffered the cardiac arrest, he was with a friend who called the police.

Fellow vendors said police chased him through the streets, forcing him to run with his heavy merchandise wrapped in a sheet. First responders arrived to the scene and attempted to revive him.

At a news conference on Friday, a spokeswoman for the council said municipal police did not chase Ndiaye as reported by some of the protesters.

Emergency services said Mbage was found unconscious on a street in Lavapies by police on patrol.

The street vendor died just before 5:00pm at No. 10, Calle del Oso.

Firefighters were brought in to put out flames throughout the neighbourhood after furious protesters torched bins and reaped havoc on the city. "From City Hall we will investigate thoroughly what happened and act accordingly", she wrote on Twitter.

Barbero said that Mbaye had been living in Spain for 12 to 15 years without proper ID, "without the possibility of finding a proper job", adding living in these conditions caused "unhealthy chronic stress".

Spain is the third busiest gateway for migrants coming to Europe, with more than 28,000 arrivals in 2017 by sea and by land, according to the International Organization for Migration.
