McTominay called up to Scotland squad

The country's under-21 coach was highly-rated, knew the young players coming through and would have brought continuity at a hard time for the governing body, but they opted instead for Alex McLeish.

Speaking at Hampden Park after announcing his squad, he said: "They are definitely prepared".

Striker McBurnie, who has scored five goals in seven appearances on loan to Barnsley from Swansea City, and Aberdeen centre-half McKenna will be missing as Gemmill's side face Andorra in a European Championship qualifier on 23 March.

The Manchester United midfielder is eligible for both Scotland and England, with his emergence under Jose Mourinho leading to much conjecture over which nation he should choose to play for.

He said: "He's shown it, he's selected some of them in his first squad since coming back in the building, he's made it clear he's putting a real interest in not just the Under 21s but the 19s and 17s".

"Both of them have consistently shown that they can be trusted to play so it is fantastic for everyone that they have been given the opportunity to become part of the full squad".

"You've got to earn it, you've got to establish yourself - and he's done great so far".

Gemmill also lost assistant manager Peter Grant to the senior set-up and he will be replaced by former Falkirk manager and ex-assistant Scotland boss Peter Houston.

"It is great for that link and the knowledge within the senior staff of what is available to them".

England had tried to persuade the young central midfielder to represent them rather than Scotland but failed despite him not representing either country at any youth level.

He added: "It was enormously flattering, there's a huge interest in the national team".
