Matt Wallace pips Andrew Johnston in play-off to win Indian Open title

Shubhankar Sharma

"For him to achieve all the things he has done, he has been phenomenal. That 17th hole was brutal today", said Wallace.

"Ive done something similar, but on a lower level".

The Englishman won six times on the Alps Tour in 2016 - including five in as many starts - to earn a place on the Challenge Tour and wasted no time in winning the Open de Portugal to gain his European Tour card.

"I am very pleased with the birdie at the last, which allowed me to grab a share of the lead. He has got the game, he has got the head and I think he is going to go a long way".

Everything went wrong for overnight joint leader Shubhankar at the challenging DLF golf course as he found bushes, water bodies, hit the flag once and also struggled with his putting to drop three double bogeys, three bogeys against six birdies to total four-under 284.

Wallace, who stayed in contention throughout the week, overcame compatriot Andrew Johnston in the play-off, 18th hole, to clinch his first Indian Open title and take home the winner's cheque of United States dollars 291,660.

"It's such a hard golf course that you have got to play well", he said.

"I hit some really good shots and that play-off".

"Ever since being three over through eight at the start of the week I've played some of the best golf of my life and to do it in that style at the end there capped it off. It's satisfying to master the course". Dave (his caddy) was saying that it was set up sometimes like the U.S. Open.

"There are some great champions".

Johnston's birdie effort from the left edge of the green looked destined for the hole, but spun around it and stayed out, leaving Wallace two putts for the title.

"I just have to go out there and try to execute like I did today and see how it goes". I will hit a few bad shots and I understand that it's all part of the game.

"I have never thought of playing it safe during the playoff, even during regulation play when I was farther out". I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Wallace singled out his biggest strong point this week.

For third-round co-leader Shubhankar Sharma, it was meltdown time for the second successive Sunday.

"Stephen Gallacher put his arm around me and said?keep going, kid".

Three players, led by leader of the first two rounds, Emiliano Grillo (78), Matthias Schwab (68) and Andrew Johnston (73) are at five-under and they are all in with a shot at the title on a course, where the battle will not be over till the very last.

"The back nine is a lot harder than the front nine".

"The wind was gusting around in different directions but I'm pretty happy with my score", added a relived Wallace.
