Manchester United midfielder Carrick to retire

Michael Carrick

Carrick underwent a treatment for irregular heart rhythm a year ago after he complained of feeling uneasy in Manchester United's clash against Burton in the Carabao Cup.

The 36-year-old has tipped Scott McTominay to be his heir with the Scot enjoying a solid start to life at the club. He also had loan stints with Swindon Town and Birmingham City early in his career.

Joining Manchester United in 2006 from Spurs, the midfielder has won five Premier League titles and a Champions League amongst various other honours at Old Trafford.

The the 36-year old former England global, made the disclosure while fielding questions from journalists ahead of his teams Champions league second half clash against Sevilla.

"That's pretty much where I'm at, which is fine".

United boss Jose Mourinho confirmed the Englishman will have a place on his coaching team once he stops playing and with Rooney tipping him for success, it seems Carrick is set to remain a part of the Red Devils beyond the ongoing season.

"Yes. It's kind of been sorted out", the midfielder stated whether he would be moving behind the scenes.

United last hosted a Champions League knockout game in 2014 and skipper Carrick says it is high time they competed again for European football's top trophy. "You can't live like you've had a career before you've had the career - you've got to earn it". "We re still talking about it to be honest so there is nothing to totally confirm yet but it s looking likely".

"I wanted to finish on my own terms so I was determined to get back fit", he added.

"I understood I'd be getting back fit that I wouldn't be playing as many games as probably I might have done, but that's something that I understood".

"Hopefully I can get some game-time at some point between now and the end of the season", he said. "I've been training hard and we'll see what happens for the rest of the season", said Carrick.
