Manchester United given hope in Fred pursuit

City scouts were sent to watch Borussia Dortmund's midfielder Julian Weigl recently

The Mail Online understand that Manchester City will not be pursuing a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

"[Pep] Guardiola did not talk to me, but there were people from City who talked to my agent". The Brazilian global is leaving Ukrainian giants, striken out from Champions League last night, by AS Roma, on an about 30 million euros fee.

The report claims officials from City and Shakhtar met to discuss the transfer earlier this season but they did not come to an agreement over a deal for the Brazilian, who is valued at £40million.

Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport today, "Fred isn't already at Manchester City, but he will surely leave in June".

In a further boost, Fred himself has hinted that he hasn't made up his mind over which Premier League club to join but named United as one of the teams he'd like to play for next season. If not to City, then Manchester United. "'In addition to being very good, Fred is very professional". Or at Manchester United as well... at Chelsea, Arsenal... clubs of great tradition in Europe and England.

"I'm still 25, there's a lot to grow and learn, play and observe great players of these clubs". That would help a lot - learn by watching them.

Fred has been with Shakhtar since 2013 after a £13.3m switch from Brazilian club side Internacional.

At Manchester United, Marouane Fellaini's imminent departure and Michael Carrick's impending retirement can potentially leave Mourinho strapped for options in midfield, especially with Ander Herrera's future up in the air as well.
