Major solar storms won't hit Earth this week, says NOAA

Magnetic Storm

Perhaps you've heard; a solar storm is on the way.

But that's not the full story.

Reports of a major solar storms that could wreak havoc on Earth this week are wide of the mark, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which has not noted any significant storm-related activity on the Sun. Rutledge went on to say that he's unsure what "equinox cracks" are, and that the SWPC doesn't use that term.

Scientists have warned the storm could wipe out satellites, GPS navigation systems and mobile phone signals and in more serious cases, a surge of particles could lead to higher than normal electricity in power lines, resulting in electrical transformers and power stations blowing out.

A geomagnetic solar storm is expected to hit Earth in the next couple of days, allowing the auroras to be seen from Australia.

The sun is actually pretty quiet at the moment.

It can disrupt technology such as power grids and communication satellites.

But the consequences of the storm could be far more serious than the appearance of the Northern Lights.

G1 is the lowest-severity geomagnetic storm on a scale of five. That storm then can cause solar flares, a release of magnetic energy, and cause the Earth's aurora borealis to light up, bringing Northern Lights chasers joy all over the globe.

"Widespread voltage control problems and protective system problems can occur, some grid systems may experience complete collapse or blackouts", the SWPC said in an explanation of a G5 storm. The weather in the space is quite cool and there is no imminent threat of any type of geomagnetic storm. If that occurs in Earth's direction, we can see the effects as the charged particles interact with our magnetosphere.

The dancing lights of the aurora may become visible in parts of Scotland and northern England and in northern regions of the USA, including in MI and Maine.

Just because this storm isn't up to the hype doesn't mean that solar storms in general should be ignored. When the sun emits superheated plasma, otherwise known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), it can trigger a geomagnetic storm.

Many news portals started publishing articles on the upcoming massive geomagnetic storm out of misunderstanding, however, the news went viral and it was trending on Google News on Monday's morning.
