Local students carry nationwide walkout into second day

Washington D.C. area held a lie in protest outside the White House to honor victims of the Parkland shooting last week and call for reform of gun laws

They held signs with the names of those killed in the Florida shooting high above their heads.

At Casco Bay High School, students expressed frustration with the stagnant debate over gun violence and demanded more of political leaders - a call that's gone up from young people around the country since the latests in a long line of mass shootings.

Schools around the state likewise took different positions on student walkouts. As a district, we respect students' rights to protest and encourage them to do so in constructive ways that promote peaceful dialogue and interaction. These opportunities included student-led assemblies that focused on inclusion and acceptance, moments of silence, and wearing bracelets, ribbons, etc.to signify solidarity.

A school district in SC said students who walked out of class earlier this week as part of the nationwide walkouts will be cited for cutting class, the Associated Press reported.

"They wanted to do something that day". Students and faculty were sporting T-shirts that read "Enough is Enough", which they purchased from the guidance office.

In response to the controversy, surrounding the walkouts, Guterman said she felt school was the most appropriate stage for the protests. Many also planned to wear burgundy and silver - the school colors of the Florida high school.

"It's really scary to me how in America we seem to have this constant, or this prevailing, notion that we should fight violence with violence and that's never, ever the solution", said senior Frances O'Grady, 18.

When the unidentified student refused to let the principal take his sign, citing basic free speech rights, he chose to walk away from the scene and was promptly followed and escorted by the principal off school grounds.

Walking down State street in the Loop just before noon, loud cheers and organized chants preceded a collection of thirty or so students from nearby Jones College Prep who held signs and repeated cries for more laws.

Community High School District 99 says they met with students ahead of Wednesday's protests and offered them alternatives but the students turned those options down.

In the video, Lonnie Seifert, the New Prague High School principal in New Prague, Minnesota, is seen confronting the student holding the sign and telling him he needed permission from the school 24 hours in advance to carry the sign. The impact of a law enforcement approach to school discipline is so harmful that these policies have been called the school-to-prison pipeline.

Our goal was to join the National School Walkout to advocate for reasonable gun control legislation. The school allowed students who wished to participate in the march to bring written permission notes from parents beforehand to have an excused absence.

In addition to the brief moment of silence at IRHS, three students left the building, one went to the auditorium and about a dozen or so stood in the hallway for the full 17 minutes. Students ran back to class. Our son did not send his letter to school administrators, and middle school students were given a safe and responsible way in which to participate. She also supports her classmates' right to counter-protest. We were thinking of the 17 we lost, " said Florence Yared, a junior at Stoneman Douglas, who was gathered with 3,000 of her fellow students on the school's football pitch. The protest has reinforced in me the idea that some things are so important that you can not back down. "I want all the kids across the world to feel safe at school".

Students were still encouraged to speak up or write their legislators. "I didn't try and cause a ruckus, but I was seen by the principal and he came and we had our exchange". The senior at Parkland High School outside Allentown, Pennsylvania, was one of hundreds who walked out of class Wednesday and attended a campus rally dubbed #parklandforparkland.

The coordinated protests were organized by Empower, the youth wing of the Women's March, which drew thousands to Washington past year. She said her distant cousin was one of the two students killed in the Aztec High School shooting last December. "If you want to fall asleep knowing that you will survive school the next day, then you need to shout".

Alan Wilbourn, a Fayetteville School District spokesman, said 222 permission slips were turned in.
