Lalu Prasad convicted in fourth fodder scam case; Jagannath Mishra acquitted

Lalu Prasad Yadav

A special CBI court today convicted former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav in fodder scam case number RC38A/96 which is related to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.76 crore from Dumka treasury of unified Bihar. 12 accused have been convicted in total, whereas five have been acquitted.

The over ₹900-crore fodder scam cases relate to illegal withdrawal of money from government treasury in different districts in the Animal Husbandry department in undivided Bihar in the 1990s when the RJD was in power in the State.

Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted in the fourth fodder scam case on Monday.

Prasad is already serving a jail term of 13.5 years in three fodder cases and lodged in the Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi.

CBI judge Shiv Pal Singh held guilty the 69-year-old RJD chief along with 18 others. The probe was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation on Patna High Court's order. As many as 64 cases were registered in the fodder scam out of which the then Chief Minister was named as accused in six cases.

After perusal of records, the court found prima facie case and the petition filed on 14/3/2018 was allowed, said Anand, another counsel for Prasad.

While the court found the former Bihar chief minister guilty, it found Jagannath Mishra, another former Bihar chief minister, not guilty.

In 2013, Prasad was convicted in the first fodder scam case involving withdrawal of ₹37.7 crore from the Chaibasa treasury.

The quantum of sentence is expected to be pronounced on Friday.

At the time of announcement of the verdict Mr Lalu Yadav was not present inside the court.

Lalu Prasad was again convicted by a special CBI court in a second fodder scam case on December 23, 2017.

Mishra and Lalu were accused of theft along with 29 others including veterinary doctors as well as IAS officials in the multi-crore case.

The bulk of the fodder scam cases were transferred to Ranchi after Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in 2000.

Another case regarding withdrawal of Rs. 139cr from the Doranda treasury is pending.
