Kagiso Rabada Charged With Level 2 Offence For Smith Send Off

South Africa batsman AB de Villiers plays a shot during Day 2 of the 2nd Test vs Australia at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth

South Africa lost Aiden Markram early but sit at an imposing position at 1/39 ahead of day two.

Kagiso Rabada's shoulder brush with and send-off of Steven Smith could end up attracting the attention of match officials, already alert to such moments in a series that is - even at just over one-Test old - not short of them.

Australia's David Warner gets quick runs during the first Test against the Proteas in Durban on 1 March 2018.

Warner was fined 75% of his match fee by the ICC on Wednesday and given three demerit points after video footage appeared to show him being restrained by team-mates during a row with the South Africa wicketkeeper.

Warner, who hogged the headlines in the build-up to the game following an ugly confrontation with De Kock in the first test, overcame a slow start to score 63 before being bowled by fast bowler Lungi Ngidi.

That saw them lose momentum somewhat, with Australia's bowlers able to chip away at the top order, especially when the ball began to reverse swing after the 50th over.

South Africa were poor in the opening innings but put up a good fight in the second, where they were set a mammoth 417-run chase and fleetingly looked capable of achieving it before their resistance crumbled. Smith and South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis met on Thursday with umpires and match referee Jeff Crowe to ensure the rest of the series is played in the right spirits. "It's not our style of play, but Australia probably believes that's the way they are the best team they can be, by being that sort of team".

As the players were leaving the field for tea on day four in Durban, Warner and de Kock became involved in a heated altercation in the stairwell leading into the dressing rooms.

Port Elizabeth: Under scrutiny following that unsavoury incident in the first game, David Warner made a half-century but Australia was shot out for a paltry 243 in the second Test against South Africa on day one here.

"In the last two years I think we're the team with the least indiscretions", Smith claimed.

For the Proteas it was Kagiso Rabada who shined with the ball as he picked up 5 wickets. He didn't manage that but 11 balls later he bowled Mitchell Starc.

Four days on, the fallout from Durban and the Warner-de Kock affair continued, with Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland releasing a statement before play started in Port Elizabeth reminding the Australian players they needed to behave. The second Test got underway on Friday.
