JNU sexual abuse: Prof told to report to police tomorrow

Delhi 26-year-old JNU PhD scholar goes missing case registered

I am outraged because of this mala fide, motivated move, trying to malign my character.

A case has been registered against a professor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of Life Sciences (SLS) following allegations of sexual harassment against him by a group of women students, police said on Friday.

However, Johri has refuted all the allegations.

The matter came to light after her family lodged a complaint on March 12 at the Vasant Kunj police station, police said. "If a girl objects, he holds a grudge against her", the women students had said in a statement yesterday.

JNUTA President Sonajharia Minz said that a confused and chaotic academic-administrative environment has been deliberately created, using a multi-pronged strategy of creating rifts inside centres and schools, attempting intimidation of teachers through various means and completely sabotaging the democratic elements of the decision-making processes of the university. They were assured that the administration will look into their grievances.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration on Thursday issued notification removing seven chairpersons and deans for not complying or refusing to implement the recent attendance system, triggering protests from teachers and students.

While Johri did not respond to queries by The Indian Express, he told PTI, "I resigned on moral grounds".

"I am leaving your so-called prestigious lab just because you are a characterless person and you do not have manners, how to talk to girls and you have a particular pattern by which you make every girl feel that she is worthless and you are a kind of Baba of life Sciences, so hard luck", she added. "The longer the cops take in arresting him, the more opportunity he will have to intimidate and pressure the complainants", a protester said.

The woman students said that the professor demanded sex from them. JNU's gender sensitisation committee, GSCASH, was recently dissolved and the Internal Complaints Committee instituted in its place.

Another complainant who has accused him of sexual misbehaviour asked how could someone can even think of comparing the harassment charges with attendance row.
