Jaguar teams up with Waymo to build driverless I-Pace SUVs

Waymo's class-leading self-driving tech uses LIDAR a system of lasers and sensors to see the world around

Waymo has around 600 versions of the Chrysler Pacifica minivans now in operation, but there are plans to create 20,0000 self-driving I-PACE cars in the next two years.

Uber announced a year ago that it planned to buy up to 24,000 vehicles from Volvo, owned by China's Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd, in a non-exclusive deal from 2019 to 2021.

The all-electric I-Pace SUV will begin testing this year before deploying in 2020.

The announcement occurred a day before two media preview days at the NY auto show.

"While we've been focused at Waymo on building the world's most experienced driver, the team at Jaguar Land Rover has developed an all-new battery-electric platform that looks to set a new standard in safety, design and capability", Waymo CEO John Krafcik, who was on hand in NY to reveal the initiative, added.

Jaguar has brought the I-PACE to the Big Apple and has been providing additional information about the auto, which is meant to compete with the likes of Tesla and Porsche, since past year.

It'll go from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds and can be charged from 0-80% capacity in just 50 minutes. Google spun out Waymo as its own business in late 2016.

Krafcik's announcements Tuesday came shortly after Arizona Gov. Dave Ducey suspended Uber from testing self-driving cars on the state's roads for the foreseeable future.

Waymo now tests its self-driving system on Chrysler Pacifica minivans built by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. At first, the service will cover a small area of Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Ralf Speth, said: "With the Jaguar I-Pace we have a world-beating vehicle that's captured the imagination of customers around the world". He also reiterated that the company's self-driving vehicles were the safest ones on the roads and they're working hard to prepare its cars for the challenges of real roads. "Our passion for further advancing smart mobility needs expert long-term partners", Prof.
