ICE spokesperson resigns after refusing to perpetuate Trump administration's fake news

James Schwab Linked In

The San Francisco spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has resigned, saying he could no longer do his job after Trump administration officials repeatedly made false public statements about a recent operation in Northern California.

Schwab said the number of immigrants that Sessions and other officials claimed to have evaded arrest was misleading because "because we were not ever going to be able to capture 100 percent of the target list".

While announcing a raid that yielded 232 arrests in Northern California, ICE suggested that California's laws increased the likelihood that immigrants without criminal convictions would face detainment. That despite the fact that President Donald Trump said that the agency would have netted "close to 1,000 people" had it not been for Schaaf. Trump administration officials have since claimed that her warning led to "864 criminal aliens" remaining "at large in the community".

Schwab said he took issue with their characterization.

ICE said while they disagreed with Schwab's take on the issue, they wished him well.

Sessions and the ICE department accused the mayor of allowing 800 unsafe illegal immigrants to roam the city, a number Schwab said was "misleading".

Although he agrees that Schaaf's actions were "misguided" and "not responsible", he takes issue with placing her with the blame of 800 unsafe people remaining at large.

Homan continued: "Thanks to the dedicated and professional work of ICE deportation officers, we were able to remove many public safety threats from the streets of the Bay Area during the past few days". "It's a false statement because we never pick up 100 percent of our targets".

Mrs. Pelosi and other anti-Trump politicians have urged ICE to focus on illegal immigrants with what they deem serious crimes on their records, and forgo deporting most illegal immigrants. "To say that 100 percent are unsafe criminals on the street, or that those people weren't picked up because of the misguided actions of the mayor, is just wrong".

"I just couldn't bear the burden - continuing on as a representative of the agency and charged with upholding integrity, knowing that information was false", he told CNN, adding that in his 16 years of experience in government he had never been asked to deflect when he knew something was inaccurate.

The ICE agency confirmed Schwab's departure to the Chronicle, but did not provide a reason for his resignation citing confidential matters.

"Sanctuary jurisdictions like San Francisco and Oakland shield risky criminal aliens from federal law enforcement at the expense of public safety", Homan said of Schaaf's warning. Schwab told CNN he'd "never" been in a situation "where someone asked me to deflect when we absolutely knew something was awry".

"I commend Mr. Schwab for speaking the truth while under intense pressure to lie", she said in a statement to The Post. "Our democracy depends on public servants who act with integrity and hold transparency in the highest regard".

The former spokesperson, who has previously worked with the U.S. Department of Defense as a staff coordinator and public affairs specialist, as well as with NASA's Ames Research Center as a Public Affairs Officer, said the lack of transparency at ICE made it impossible for him to continue to do his job.

"While we can't put a number on how many targets avoided arrest due to the mayor's warning, it clearly had an impact", Johnson said. "It was my first time being asked to do that".

The Department of Justice declined to comment.
