Google search results now available in Apple's iMessage app drawer

Google Search is now available within iMessage.

The Google app for iOS is adding a number of new features today that expand the availability of Search functionality via the share extension and iMessage.

If you already have the Google app on your device, no additional installation is required. Nuance, for example, just shut down its Swype keyboard app; and Swiftkey had exited to Microsoft a couple of years ago.

Google announced via its Blog Monday that iMessage users will henceforth be capable of searching and sharing GIFs, restaurant info and even videos using the new Google for iMessage extension.

Besides GIFs, you can search for nearby restaurants, trending news, YouTube videos, weather and nearby points of interest. You can tap on the icon for "Food" or "Nearby" to share your favorite locations, or perform a search and share a card directly into the conversation. Just tap on the restaurant card, and we'll take you to the Google Search page, where you can look up the busiest times, as well as menus and reviews.

And within the Google app itself on iPad, you can drag a link, image or text into iMessage or the Notes app for safe keeping. Switch to GIF Search mode, and you can find and share a "happy birthday" GIF.

To the right of the search bar, there is also a GIF lookup feature to paste animations into a conversation.

Making Gboard's features available via an iMessage extension makes sense because not everyone wants to swap out their default keyboard on their iOS device.

The update includes a "drag and drop" feature on iPad, an iMessage extension and a discover and explore functionality in Safari. Apple's devices contribute about 50 percent to Google's mobile search revenue, according to Sacconaghi. As TechCrunch notes, some of these new features have existed within the Google app for a bit before moving to iMessage. One is a new share sheet option - now, when you share a webpage from Safari with Google, it will also show you suggestions for related content.
