Gabe Newell says Valve is going to start shipping games again

Gabe Newell Valve Is Back To Making And Shipping Games

During a recent press briefing held at the new Bellevue's offices, Gabe Newell announced Valve is "back to making and shipping games", as reported by The Game Awards' host and producer, Geoff Keighley.

It's important to note that Newell said games, so that should mean Valve will be shipping something after Artifact.

Valve has been keeping busy managing Steam, so the company behind popular games like Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead, and DotA 2 hasn't been making many games lately.

Not that it matters - these games might as well not exist, as they require specialist hardware to be played, and by and large gamers have voted with their wallets and decided that VR is a awful waste of time. They are also in charge of Steam, the biggest digital distribution platform on the PC dedicated to video games. Valve would be better off letting Traveller's Tales and Lego make another "Portal" game instead! Newell's statement doesn't clarify if there are projects in the works beyond those games, but nature of the statement does seem to indicate that there are things coming we don't yet know about.

Said in classic Newell form (he's known to be a bit cheeky), his commentary definitely did little to dampen that fandom flame. "We aren't going to be talking about it today", he said, "but sort of the big thing, the new arrow we have in our quiver, really, is our ability to develop hardware and software simultaneously".

"When Miyamoto is sitting down and thinking about the next version of Zelda or Mario, he's thinking what is the controller going to look like, what sort of graphics and other capabilities", explained Newell. Following those comments, he addressed Artifact and how it was just the first of several impending Valve titles. "That's something we've been jealous of, and that's something you'll see us taking advantage of subsequently".

If future Valve games are intended for release on the Vive, then very few people will bother to play them.

Valve isn't done with hardware though, but now it'll go "hand-in-hand with software design", meaning you should really keep an eye on what Valve is up to in the coming months.
