Fresh warrant against Zia after bail

Khaleda’s bail proves judiciary independent says Law Minister

Her lawyer Zainul Abedin told reporters the court had agreed to an interim bail of four months.

Bangladesh opposition leader Khaleda Zia is set to be released from jail after a court on Monday granted her bail, her lawyer said.

A Dhaka court sentenced the Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader on February 8 to five years in prison for embezzling around $250,000 of foreign funds meant for a charity created by Zia in 1991.

Zia, who entered politics in the mid-1980s after her military dictator husband was assassinated in an abortive coup, also faces dozens of separate charges related to violence and corruption.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hassan Foyez Siddique forwarded the two petitions filed by the government and Anti-Corruption Commission, seeking stay on the High Court bail orders, and fixed tomorrow for hearing. On February 8, the court had also sentenced five other accused, including Zia's son and BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman, to 10 years' imprisonment and fined them Tk 2.1 crore each.

The verdict against Zia had jolted the country's political scenario ahead of this year's general elections. Their feud hangs over the run-up to a December election with Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) vowing to boycott the polls in a protest against what it has said was Zia's unfair jailing on trumped up charges.

BNP's secretary general Mirza Falhrul Islam Alamgir earlier said the party would not take part in the polls discarding Zia and "no national election will be held without BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia".
