FBI officials recommend former #2 at FBI Andrew McCabe be fired

Former Deputy Director of the FBI Andrew Mc Cabe could be fired from the agency just days before his retirement over his decision to allow FBI officials to speak to reporters about a Clinton Foundation investigation in 2016

The FBI determined in an internal review that former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe should be terminated, according to a report from The New York Times.

Sessions is reviewing a recommendation from the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility that McCabe should be fired immediately for misleading Justice Department officials, said the person who asked not to be identified discussing the sensitive deliberations. The McCabe-linked source shot down an allegation that McCabe tried to stymie an investigation into the Clinton family charity.

President Trump has frequently slammed McCabe, seeing him as biased against his administration and in the tank for Hillary Clinton during the campaign. "We have no personnel announcements at this time", Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.

Mr McCabe announced that he was stepping aside in January and taking a leave of absence. In particular, McCabe came under fire for what Republicans claimed were conflicts of interest because his wife ran for state senate in Virginia as a Democrat in 2015 while the FBI was investigating Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state.

"That process includes recommendations from career employees and no termination decision is final until the conclusion of that process", she said in a statement. The FBI isn't supposed to disclose information about ongoing criminal investigations, but the October 30, 2016, story went into an extraordinary level of detail about turf wars between the FBI and the Justice Department over the handling of the Clinton Foundation probe. McCabe first joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1996, investigating organized crime cases in NY. The president remarked in December that McCabe was "racing the clock to retire with full benefits". If the Justice Department does not move on the recommendation, conservatives might view officials there as unfairly protecting McCabe.

The Justice Department's inspector general has investigated the decision-making in the Clinton email case, including events and actions involving McCabe.

The Wall Street Journal story was written by Devlin Barrett, who is now a reporter at The Washington Post.
