Facebook signs deal to exclusively stream 25 MLB games

However, the social network is no stranger to partnering on sports content; it is also streaming UEFA Champions League events from Fox Sports, Mexican soccer games from Univision, and it showed 20 non-exclusive MLB games last season.

The games add to Facebook's growing sports lineup.

This MLB season, Facebook will get exclusive rights to stream afternoon MLB games, starting with the first game on April 4th between Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets, according to a report from Bloomberg. First time a major US league has granted social network exclusivity.

The analyst added that it's likely the Major League Baseball views this as more of a test than any sort of money-making endeavor, noting that afternoon games on weekdays typically aren't marquee events.

Facebook Inc said today it signed a deal with Major League Baseball (MLB) to stream 25 games this season. MLB Network, the league's television arm, will produce the games. For Facebook, however, the rights allow for experimentation with things like social integration and graphics during the broadcast, enhancements popular with younger viewers drawn to digital platforms.

The weekly broadcasts will be shown exclusively on Facebook Watch in the USA via the MLB Live show page.

Facebook will also have rights to show the baseball games globally, though they won't be exclusive outside the U.S. MLB and Facebook will update the schedule on a monthly basis. These will be available on Facebook Watch in the USA and around the world.

This is not the first time that Facebook has gotten involved in sports-related content. Given that Amazon has already paid $50 million to streaming Thursday night National Football League games a year ago, the MLB arrangement might be investing in a market that Facebook is already in.
