Ex-spokesman says for Texas, Ted Cruz is a moderate

Republicans still won the turnout battle in Texas by a half-million votes.

"They want us to take on these really urgent priorities", he said, "not just this smallness and pettiness that dominates the national conversation today". "My name is Rafael Edward Cruz".

In the 32nd District contest to take on GOP Rep. Pete Sessions for his Dallas-area seat, former National Football League player Colin Allred led the way with 40%, and three other candidates battling in the mid-teens to make the runoff.

That candidates with no name ID and essentially non-existent funding picked up one third of the vote against O'Rourke, who has so far spent $4.2 million, shows that many Democrats "still don't know who (O'Rourke) is", Rottinghaus said.

Texas is the latest place where Democrats are finding optimism for 2018 after kicking off the nation's primary election season with their biggest midterm turnout in more than a quarter-century.

Texas voted on Tuesday, and the state is still very much red.

"I think Texans nearly expect their elected officials to be in the national political conservation", Sullivan said.

Sen. Ted Cruz smiled Wednesday when an interviewer noted the contradiction between Cruz deriding his election opponent for going by a nickname and Cruz himself using a nickname. More than 1.3 million votes were cast in the Republican primary, while 555,000 were cast in the Democratic primary, a 70 percent to 30 percent advantage for Republicans over Democrats, just as had been the case in the 2010 primaries. CNN's race rating of the Texas Senate race is Likely Republican. He said, "You're absolutely right".

Cruz agreed, saying he was named after his father, also Rafael Cruz, a Cuban immigrant.

Cruz, however, has already reached for the President Donald Trump playbook, mocking O'Rourke's name in a country jingle and reminding Texas voters that his real name is "Robert".

"We can get into name calling and talk about why the other person is such an terrible guy, or we can focus on the big things we want to do for the future of our country, for the generations that will succeed us", he said.

Cruz labeled O'Rourke as a "left-wing liberal Democrat" and compared him to Vermont U.S. Bernie Sanders during a conference call with reporters before the polls even closed on Tuesday.

Though most polls and political analysts believe Cruz still has the edge over O'Rouke, there are signs that he could lose.

The Texas Tribune reported that it's been 22 years since the state elected a woman to a full term in the U.S. Congress.
