Eagles releasing defensive end Vinny Curry, saving $5 million from salary cap

Source: Eagles releasing defensive end Vinny Curry, saving $5 million from salary cap

So Curry, 29, is a free agent.

In a move that would seem to be connected, the Bucs released defensive end Robert Ayers. His contract includes $11.5-million in guarantees against injury.

In his six seasons with the Eagles, Curry had 147 tackles, 85 combined quarterback pressures and hits, 27.5 tackles for loss, 22 sacks, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 84 regular-season games (16 starts).

The 29-year-old spent the first six years of his National Football League career with the Philadelphia Eagles, starting all 19 games during their run to the Super Bowl title last season. He also posted the eighth-best run-stop percentage among 4-3 defensive ends, per PFF. He's a good player who'll improve the Buccaneers' defense.

The insider goes on to note that Curry had a trigger on his deal that would have guaranteed $5 million of his $9 million salary for the 2018 season.

According to multiple reports, Curry declined to take a pay cut and the team had been shopping him, along with linebacker Mychal Kendricks, in trades this week in an effort to clear cap room after a number of offseason additions. It turns out, he was right to say no.

After cutting Curry, the Eagles still have more money invested in the defensive line than any other positional group on the team. A season ago, the Buccaneers ranked last in yards allowed, 22nd in points allowed, last in defensive DVOA, and last in sacks.
