Eagles release Brent Celek after 11 seasons

Eagles Draft Series Analyzing WRs Courtland Sutton and Christian Kirk

The $7.5 million in savings nearly gets the Eagles under the number they need to be under the cap when the new league year starts Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Eagles' defensive line, as it stood Tuesday afternoon (in the fast changing National Football League offseason environment) is an absolute terror.

Tight end Brent Celek, the longest-tenured member of the Philadelphia Eagles, was released by the team on Tuesday in a move that will free up some much-needed salary-cap space. While the situation is a sad one for the Eagles organization and fans, it was good to see Celek finish out his final season with the Eagles as a Super Bowl Champion.

Celek has certainly been durable, missing just one game over his last 11 years, something that should mitigate concerns about his age. He finished out his long and successful run with 398 catches for 4,998 yards, and 31 touchdowns. Celek recently told Eagles beat reporter Jeff McLane that he's not ready to hang up his cleats; however, he'll have to take on a niche role in order to prove valuable to tight end-needy teams.

Last season, Johnson was named to the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro.

The three other Eagles tight ends now under contract - Billy Brown, Joshua Perkins, and Adam Zaruba - did not play a single regular-season snap for the team in 2017. His dedication to his profession and this organization is unmatched and he will go down as one of the best tight ends in franchise history. Ertz is coming off another terrific season where he led the team with 74 receptions and 824 receiving yards and was tied for second with eight touchdowns.
