Dog Dies After Airline Worker Has It Placed In Overhead Bin

The incident went down on a United flight from Houston to New York City

Maggie Gremminger a passenger on the United fight 1284 from Houston Intercontinental to New York's LaGuardia said that a passenger boarded the flight with a TSA-compliant pet carrier with a small dog inside.

A fellow passenger on the flight, June Lara, posted to Facebook: "There was no sound as we landed and opened his kennel".

"We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them", said the airline's statement.

"They assured the safety of the family's pet", she said. After the flight attendant asked her to move it above, the woman adamantly refused, communicating her dog was in the bag.

United Airlines have branded the death of a dog forced to travel in an overhead bin "a tragic accident". The attendant later said she did not know the dog was in the bag.

The passenger had the black French bulldog in a standard pet carrier, which she initially placed under the seat in front of her, according to Gremminger.

The airline issued a similar apology last August when a dog died in the cargo hold of a plane that was delayed on the tarmac for two hours with temperatures over 90°F inside. "Her daughter was also crying", she said.

A spokesperson for United said the airline will investigate the dog's death "to prevent this from ever happening again".

The flight attendants "felt that the innocent animal was better off crammed inside the overhead container without air and water", Lara wrote on Facebook. "She made sure the flight attendant understood there was her dog and when the flight attendant still pushed her".

The eyewitness went on Twitter, saying that "my heart is broken".

United transported 138,178 animals previous year, more than any other American airline according to the US Department of Transportation.

According to the airline's website, pets are allowed on most flights within the U.S. In-cabin pets must travel in approved kennels that can fit completely under the seat, where the kennel must remain at all times.

In 2017, United had the highest number of animal deaths of any USA carriers, according to a Department of Transportation (DOT) report, with 18 animals killed and 13 injured in transport.
