DeVos struggles to answer basic questions about schools in her home state

Education Secretary Betsy De Vos defended the administration's response to school shootings

She made unsupported claims about the benefits of school choice and came up empty when asked about the MI education disaster, helped by her huge spending there to advance poor charter schools.

DeVos's "60 Minutes" interview Sunday night was widely panned with many, including news outlet Axios, saying the Education Secretary "struggle [d] to answer fairly basic questions on school performance".

"I don't know. Overall, I, I can't say overall that they have all gotten better", she said. In the above clip, DeVos was asked to explain why it makes sense to take money away from a school that's already not working and expect it to improve.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said Monday that the new commission on school safety will take a look at increasing the age requirement to purchase all firearms. She proposes expansion of that system and has pushed for it in MI for decades. "Your argument that if you take funds away that the schools will get better is not working in MI, where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here".

Last week, DeVos was roundly criticized by students and teachers for not answering their questions when she visited the school in Parkland.

DeVos also admitted that she does not "intentionally visited schools that are underperforming". Teachers began tweeting photos of what their classrooms actually look like at the education secretary. "Not in school- school buildings, not in institutions, not in systems..."

"We have invested billions and billions and billions of dollars from the federal level".

"I think that every state is looking in that same direction though Florida had, obviously, immediate motivation", Ms. DeVos said.

She said students - like the survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS, where 17 people were gunned down on Valentine's Day - are leading the effort to limit gun violence.

A study confirmed those findings late a year ago but the state's largest teachers union, the Florida Education Association, questioned its methodology.
