Counter-terrorism police investigate death of man in London

Boris Berezovsky

Mr Berezovsky was also a friend of Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko, who was poisoned with radioactive polonium-210 in London in 2006.

Police said the death was not linked to the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury.

"The death is now being treated as an unexplained", said London police."There is no evidence to suggest a link to the incident in Salisbury".

But he is believed to be Nikolai Glushkov - a friend of the late Russian oligarch Boris Beresovsky, who criticised President Vladimir Putin.

Counter-terror police said it was in charge of the probe "as a precaution because of associations that the man is believed to have had", a spokesman said.

The Met did not name Glushkov, but confirmed they were investigating the death of a man in his 60s in the Kingston borough, which was being treated as unexplained. A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

The victim is believed to be Nikolai Glushkov, who claimed political asylum in the United Kingdom after being convicted of fraud, the BBC reports.

Glushkov, who has been an executive at state airline Aeroflot and also worked for Berezovsky's auto company LogoVAZ, followed and was granted asylum in 2010.

Glushkov said: "You have the deaths of Boris and Badri over a short period of time".

Berezovsky was found dead at home in 2013, an incident which had some hallmarks of suicide, but which Gluskhov was adamant was politically motivated.

Speaking to the Guardian at the time, Glushkov said he was extremely sceptical that Berezovsky took his own life, claiming that he was "killed".

Glushkov moved to the United Kingdom in 2006 after a Moscow court sentenced him to a two-year suspended sentence for fraud in 2006. Natasha is believed to live in the UK.

In March last year, he was sentenced to eight years in prison in absentia and issued a one million Russian Ruble fine for allegedly defrauding Aeroflot of $122 million during his tenure as finance director there in the late 1990s.
