Confirmed: Claire Foy Was Paid Less Than Matt Smith on 'The Crown'

The Crown Season 2 Claire Foy Netflix

British actress Claire Foy, who starred as a young Queen Elizabeth in the critically acclaimed Netflix series "The Crown", was paid less than her co-star, Matt Smith, according to the television show's producers.

Foy, however, will not be able to cash in on that promise: The series is replacing its leads for season three, when Olivia Colman will step into the role of Queen Elizabeth II.

Foy played Queen Elizabeth in the drama from showrunner Peter Morgan, Sony Pictures Television Studios and Left Bank and earned a Golden Globe, SAG Award and Emmy nomination, among other accolades, for the part.

Asked whether Foy was paid the same as Smith, the producers acknowledged that he did make more due to his "Doctor Who" fame, but that they would rectify that for the future.

When The Crown premiered in 2016, Smith was the more recognizable star thanks to his 2010-2013 tenure as the 11th Doctor on Doctor Who.

"Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen", said Mackie.

It should be noted that Claire Foy will not get the chance to earn a fairer paycheck on The Crown since every role is being recast for the period drama's third season, which will begin filming in July and jump ahead to the 1970s.

The producers also admitted that the transition into a more contemporary story is a minefield for them, as they risk offending their actual subjects.

But the pay disparity between Smith and Foy - despite Foy's newcomer status before the show debuted, as the production company noted - sparked outrage from viewers who noted she was the star of the show and deserved better compensation compared to Smith.

"Seasons 3 and 4 will be the test of whether the show really has the legs to survive", said Harries.

Netflix's The Crown may be one of the most expensive series ever made, but whoever crafted the budget clearly wasn't thinking about the optics of paying the queen less than her male co-star.
