Colombia's Santos orders resumption of talks with ELN rebels

Former guerrilla commander and Senate candidate Pablo Catatumbo

The report notes that the Democratic Center has the best chance to build a functioning coalition in Congress, given that the party secured the largest number of seats, and right-wing parties secured a total of about two-thirds of the seats.

That represented about 30 percent fewer votes than Duque, though the two have been close in presidential vote polls. He has enjoyed solid showing in polls, coming within the margin of error behind Petro in the most recent presidential survey. He has pledged to create a “social economy” that will shift the economy from oil toward agriculture.

Petro was officially elected as the presidential candidate of the Decencia (Decent) coalition of progressive parties, which includes his own Human Colombia Movement, the Independent Social Alliance and the Indigenous and Social Alternative Movement (MAIS).

More than 6 million votes were cast in the three-way right-wing primary and 3.5 million in the two-way left-wing contest.

The Marxist group, now transformed into a political party called the Revolutionary Alternative Common Force, failed to take a single seat in congressional elections as it polled less than one per cent on a day where the big victor was a hard-right critic of the peace accords.

The Centro Democratico party of former president Alvaro Uribe, a fierce opponent of the peace agreement, polled the most votes, winning 19 seats in the Senate and 33 in the lower house.

As expected, the FARC performed poorly in the Sunday's election, garnering less than 0.4 percent of the vote for Senate and less than 0.3 percent in the lower house.

Conservative parties, who opposed the 2016 peace deal with the FARC, take lead in parliamentary elections.

The group's presidential candidate withdrew from the race last week due to ill health and the party is not naming a replacement.

"Avoiding further suffering by communities like that which has been caused by more than 50 years of uninterrupted conflict should be one of the main reasons for the new round of talks", said the OAS Secretary General.

"It's important that they're now not at war, but really they won't have much impact on elections", analyst Juan Carlos Palou said."And anyway they don't have any attractive or innovative ideas". Jaimes said he planned to vote for Petro in the left-wing primary.

But Santos is ineligible for reelection in May's presidential vote and with his critics bolstered by Sunday's results, it is unsure exactly what peace will look like when he leaves office.
