Claire Foy Paid Less Than Matt Smith for 'The Crown'

Claire Foy and The Queen

As the show moves into the 1970s, Olivia Coleman will now step in as an older version of the monarch for the upcoming season three.

Today it emerged ITN has a gender pay gap of a whopping 19.6%, which rises to 77.2% for bonuses, just a day after Netflix revealed that Claire Foy got paid less than Matt Smith for The Crown because she was less famous.

A producer of hit royal drama "The Crown" says Claire Foy, who played the central role of Queen Elizabeth II, was paid less than her on-screen husband. Creators of the show tried to justify his initial bigger salary with the fact that he was formerly the star of "Doctor Who"; perhaps more high-profile than Claire's "Wolf Hall", but if the industry continues to calculate pay by what's on the actors' resumes, women will undoubtedly be overshadowed most of the time.

The path certainly looks brighter for Foy's Season 3 and 4 replacement Olivia Colman, however. Smith was nominated twice, with Foy, for Screen Actors Guild awards for performance in an ensemble for The Crown.

She only played Queen Elizabeth for two seasons of The Crown.

We need to use the Claire Foy case to think about the universal implications of the pay gap, and the risky, roundabout ways in which it might be justified. "Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen", she said.

It's reported that Claire earnt around £40,000 per episode of the show. The Crown costs $7 (€5.6) million an episode to produce.

The disparity further highlights an ongoing issue of unequal pay in the entertainment world.

Her male counterpart Mark Wahlberg received a negotiated fee of $1.5 (€1.2) million.

Actress Michelle Williams was revealed earlier this year to have been paid a fraction of what her co-star earned for re-shooting scenes in All The Money In The World after Kevin Spacey was replaced by Christopher Plummer.
