Chiefs agree to terms with WR Sammy Watkins

There is no doubt Watkins has talent but general manager Chris Ballard made it a point that the team will build through the draft rather than free agency and while they will plug some holes, they won't overpay to do so.

With his speed, Watkins brought a deep-ball threat opposing defenses had to respect, but often, Watkins seemed out of sync with quarterback Jared Goff and was a footnote in the Rams' offense. In 2016, a broken bone in his left foot sidelined him for the first eight games of the season, which led Buffalo to decline his fifth-year option and eventually trade him to Los Angeles. Watkins also racked up nine scores that season. Watkins played in 15 games, catching 39 of 70 targets for 593 yards.

It never really happened. In the Rams' playoff loss to Atlanta, Watkins had one catch for 23 yards.

The Rams had considered using the franchise tag on Watkins, but opted instead to tag safety Lamarcus Joyner.

Patrick Mahomes is taking over an offense that already had plenty of firepower, but the Kansas City Chiefs added another weapon Tuesday. Watkins hasn't played a full season since his rookie year.

National Football League free agency officially begins on March 14.

Two years later the Chiefs would snag Reid's old pal Jeremy Maclin when he became a free agent, inking the former Eagles wideout to a $55 million deal, only to cut him two years later.
