Black Roommate Goes to Court in Support of Racist Dorm Mate

Connecticut Student Released

That was a state judge's somber advice to Brianna Brochu, who was expelled by the University of Hartford after her Instagram post detailing how she harassed her roommate went viral. The misdemeanor criminal mischief and breach of peace charges against Brochu could potentially be dropped after her probation is up, so long as she sticks to the conditions set by the court. Brochu has been granted probation for her offences, and must perform an additional 200 hours of community service, with 50 of those hours being at a literacy organization, as well as another 50 at a social services group.

Rowe posted a video to Facebook explaining that she'd been sick for a while, and recently learned that her ex-roommate, Brianna Brochu, had been putting rotten food in her beauty supplies, and had even smeared her backpack with a used tampon.

Her former roommate, Chennel "Jazzy" Rowe, attended Brochu's hearing in Superior Court in Hartford and told Judge Omar Williams that she did not oppose Brochu's request for accelerated rehabilitation.

The state's attorney said there was no evidence Brochu showed racial animus toward Rowe in her retaliatory actions, even in Brochu's social media history, ignoring calls by the NAACP to charge her with a hate crime. Brochu originally said she acted in retaliation for Rowe making fun of her snoring on Snapchat. Finishing off her incriminating post by calling Rowe "Jamaican Barbie", Brochu's actions earned her a place on the Daily Dot's list of worst millennials of 2017. "There's a system for white people and there's a system for black people", he said about the case, which the charges made against Brochu will possibly still follow her into the future.

Brochu also can not contact Rowe and must submit to a mental health evaluation, the outlet said. While Rowe had gone to administrators upon seeing Brochu's post, she said neither the school nor local police took her claims seriously until she shared her complaint online.

He said Brochu wanted to apologize sooner, but he advised her not to because of a potential civil lawsuit. The judge urged Brochu to embrace diversity and the opportunity it gives one to grow, to not waste her opportunity at a second chance and to move forward.

But state NAACP President Scot X. Esdaile told reporters outside the courtroom that he feels Brochu should have been charged with a hate crime.

"There's a system for white people and there's a system for black people. That's what we face every day".
