BJP, Congress put out lists for March 23 Rajya Sabha polls

Union minister of state Mansukh Mandaviya on his way to Gujarat assembly on Monday to file RS nomination for the second term

Though the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are fighting the bypolls in Gorakhpur and Phulpur together, it is likely that the two parties along with the Congress will support each other in the Rajya Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh. Pandey will be filing her nominations at Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly on Monday afternoon. For now, the Congress holds two of these seats, NCP also holds two seats while the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena share the remaining two.

The BJP has already fielded union ministers Purshottam Rupala and Mansukh Mandavia, while the Congress has nominated Amiben Yagnik and tribal leader Naren Rathwa.

Former Chief Minister Narayan Rane, who founded the Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksh a year ago, filed his nomination from the BJP's quota.

The final nomination was filed by Congress candidate Akhilesh Prasad Singh, who was a junior minister in UPA I, representing RJD.

"There is infighting in the Congress and they are confused about their candidates".

The nomination process for the elections to UP's 10 Rajya Sabha seats will close on March 12 and polling, if necessary, will be held on March 23. March 15 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature.

Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki expressed confidence that both their official candidates would win the RS polls. It was expected that the party's parliamentary board would meet on Sunday to finalise names of candidates.

Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said there was huge discontent within the Congress and that there are chances of cross voting.

The 10 Congress candidates include senior journalist Kumar Ketkar from Maharashtra, and former Union minister Naranbhai Ratwa and the party's familiar television face Amee Yajnik from Gujarat.

The BJP, with its tally of 122 in the Assembly, is poised to get three Rajya Sabha seats now, while the Sena, the Congress and the NCP will get one each.

"As part of the political strategy to counter the Congress' disruptive practices, we have fielded our third candidate, Kiritsinh Rana".
