Bihar BJP leader accused of mowing down 9 schoolchildren surrenders

Muzaffarpur hit-and-run case FIR lodged against BJP leader Manoj Baitha

The ANI report added that Baitha has been shifted to Patna Medical College from the Sri Krishna Medical College for treatment for injuries he suffered during the accident.

Baitha's surrender comes a day after the BJP suspended him for the incident, which took place in Muzaffarpur on Saturday. RJD leaders demanded immediate arrest of the BJP leader on charges of drunken driving, resulting in the death of nine children and alleged that prohibition norms were being violated by NDA leaders. All this happened in the last two days that the ruling BJP took to move on from denying his association with the party to admitting it and suspending his membership for 6 years.

Manoj Baitha, a district -level BJP worker from Sitamarhi, who was suspended from the party after the incident and the outcry, surrendered at the official residence of Muzaffarpur SSP.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar spoke on the incident for the first time in his speech in the Assembly on Wednesday, describing the mishap as "very saddening" and calling for stricter laws to cur road accidents in the densely populated state.

The police say that they confirmed that it was Baitha who was responsible for the reckless crimes via eyewitness accounts.

On February 24, Baitha rammed his SUV into a government school building's compound, killing nine children and injuring over 20.

"We are being told the vehicle belongs to a BJP General Secretary and the driver is absconding and administration has not been able to arrest him so far".

The Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar has decided not to celebrate the Holi festival this year in order to mourn the death of 9 children who were killed in Muzaffarpur.

He also questioned: Where did the driver get the liquor from when there is a ban on liquor in the state?
