Attorney says 'Pharma Bro' OK after sentence

Martin Shkreli left next to Ben Brafman his lawyer during his sentencing

U.S. District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto (KEE'-yoh maht-soo-MOH'-toh) is weighing Brafman's request to sentence him to 18 months, or at least 15 years as prosecutors have requested.

Shkreli gained infamous notoriety in 2015 when as CEO of Turing, he raised the price of its anti-parasite drug Daraprim by more than 5,000 percent, from $13.50 per pill to $750.

Shkreli's sentencing came after he was ordered to relinquish a rare Wu-Tang Clan album "Once Upon A Time In Shaolin", Lil Wayne's unreleased project, Tha Carter V., $5 million in cash in his E-Trade brokerage account, sell his stake in Vyera Pharmaceuticals, and a painting by Pablo Picasso to help pay off a $7.36 million forfeiture for securities fraud.

Shkreli told the court that he was very sorry for his actions, and apologised to his investors.

Still, Shkreli leaves a long trail of bad karma and angry people - including his own lawyer - in his wake that aren't sad to see him to go to prison for fraud.

Shkreli insisted he was being persecuted by prosecutors for being outspoken and confidently predicted after his conviction that he was unlikely to be sentenced to jail. "I took down Martin Shkreli".

But even Mr Brafman reportedly acknowledged "there are times when I want to punch him in the face" because his client's behaviour complicated the defence.

"I'm not the same person I was", Shkreli said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis had said a 15-year sentence was justified in part because Shkreli's crimes were not an "isolated lapse in judgment", but a pattern of conduct including separate frauds for his two hedge funds and for his drug company Retrophin Inc RTRX.O .

Before the sentencing, Brafman told Matsumoto that Shkreli, 34, suffered from depression and an anxiety disorder and was a "somewhat broken" person, whom the government wanted to "throw away". Afterward, he tweeted that the lawmakers were "imbeciles".

Before sentencing him, the judge said that it was up to Congress to fix the issue of the drug price hike.

Before sentencing him, the judge said it was up to Congress to fix the issue of the HIV price-hike and spoke about how his family and friends "state, nearly universally, that he is kind and misunderstood" and willing to help others in need.

Shkreli had been free on bail until a judge jailed him for offering a $5,000 bounty to anyone who could get a lock of Hillary Clinton's hair a year ago.

She said it was clear he is a "tremendously gifted individual who has the capacity for kindness".

In a letter sent last week to the judge, Shkreli pleaded for leniency and for the first time admitted he had erred. One woman described how she became an avid follower of Shkreli's social media commentary about science, thepharmaceutical industry, but mostly, about himself.

Another supporter said Shkreli's soft side was demonstrated when he adopted a cat from a shelter - named Trashy - that became a fixture on his livestreams. With a choking voice, he reiterated in court his remorse at the "shameful actions" that led to his downfall.
