Amazon updates Alexa so you don't have to say 'Alexa' repeatedly

Amazon makes it easier to give Alexa follow-up commandsMore

Amazon's Alexa devices include the $49.99 Echo Dot, to the $99.99 Echo, and the $229.99 Echo Show.

Thankfully Amazon's made some changes, and it should cut down the number of times you have to refer to Alexa by name when shouting out multiple commands.

The basic idea is simple, and obvious in hindsight.

If you're in the habit of offering multiple commands in one sitting, and want Alexa to listen out for them all, all you need to do is switch on "Follow-Up Mode". The blue ring on your Alexa device of choice will light up during these 5 seconds to indicate that she's listening.

Another Twitter user reported that Alexa began laughing in the middle of an office conversation: "I asked why she laughed and she said, 'Sorry, I am not sure'". "She didn't even say anything, just laughed". This means that the user will have to clearly issue the command because if they don't, Alexa probably won't separate it from the background noise. At the very least it'll cut down the amount of times you have to say "Alexa" in any given day.

The company said it would change the command to "Alexa, can you laugh?" ALEXA: "OK, the heat is set to 68".

Amazon's digital assistant, Alexa, who, thanks to her artificial intelligence, answers questions and receives orders from users, shows odd symptoms - which refer to parapsychological thrillers - as she suddenly starts without a reason to laugh in a frightening way it can freeze the blood.

You can enable Follow-Up Mode on your device by opening the Alexa app and navigating to the Settings menu.

Scroll down to Follow-Up Mode and use the toggle to turn it on. As usual, saying "stop", "cancel" or "go to sleep" will stop Alexa from listening. Moreover, it won't wait for follow-up commands if Alexa is streaming music or playing an audiobook.
