Amazon Alexa is getting less chatty, more efficient - thanks to Brief Mode

Asking Alexa to do something results in a vocal response (unless she's lost her voice), but that's not always really necessary and Amazon is experimenting with replacing Alexa's voice with other sounds to convey a response.

Pretty cool, right? But Amazon hasn't mentioned anything about the so-called Brief Mode, and asking Alexa to activate the feature didn't fetch any luck for some disappointed users.

UPDATE 2: And, it's back! While Amazon itself hasn't made any announcements about the feature, Echo users around the globe are reporting their experiences with the new, less-talkative Alexa.

The option for the Brief Mode to turn on or off has not appeared in Alexa app. Several people on reddit have reported receiving the new capability on some of their Echo devices, but some say the new ability disappeared a few hours later.

Voice assistants are becoming more and more ubiquitous, but the popular Amazon Alexa assistant has a wordiness problem. When Alexa is asked to change the state of the smart home device, the Brief Mode gets activated and Alexa performs the task and responds us with a confirmation chime. While total silence would be a little more preferable in most scenarios, a beep tone is undoubtedly better than a shrill and loud "OK!"

It's unclear at this point if Alexa's new Brief Mode is already starting to roll out to devices or if it accidentally became available to the public. Ask Alexa to turn on or off a smart appliance and she will say "Okay" before completing the task.

Currently, the new feature seems to be in a test phase, if it does gain popularity, Amazon could expand the option for other commands as well.
