Alexander Volkov Emerges As Title Contender With Vicious Knockout Of Fabricio Werdum

Paul Craig

Werdum scores a sweep and winds up in top position. Immediately Werdum gets the takedown and has Volkov on his back. From there, he landed a few punches before the round ended.

Vai Cavalo, on the other hand, was eager to take the fight to the ground, and landed yet another single leg on Drago. Werdum seemed to have slowed considerably, and wound up with a cut under the eye.

Fabricio Werdum looked like he was going for another jumping kick, but he didn't follow through with it. Volkov was up to the task, easily pushing his opponent and keeping range.

Werdum charged out to begin the fight and quickly took Volkov down. Volkov gets to his feet and is now unloading on Werdum with striking. A couple of good elbows land for Werdum but Volkv is defending as well as he can. Then, Volkov was able to unload a number of strikes on Werdum as the former champ covered up. A right hook was there for Volkov. Werdum now presses Volkov against the cage but he shrugs him off. However, Werdum stayed mobile and declined to offer a steady target. He took the back, but Volkov escaped and the two stood, even though Werdum obviously wanted to keep the fight on the ground.

For a third time, Werdum went for a deep half sweep, and he pulled it off for a second time.

Volkov walked forward in the fourth, looking to capitalize on the feet. Volkov is still throwing shots off his back as well. Volkov prevented the move, settling in his opponent's guard and staring angrily at him when Werdum simply tried to control the wrists. Werdum throws down ground-and-pound to end the round.

Volkov then threw some massive punches. Volkov is on a five-fight win streak and a win over Werdum would certainly put him in the title hunt.
