Action will be taken against armed rallies: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee with Sharad Pawar and other NCP leaders including Tariq Anwar and Praful Patel, after a meeting at Parliament house in New Delhi on Tuesday

Some hooligans are trying to give Lord Ram a bad name. "It has to dealt with strongly", she said.

Ahead of Ram Navami, Mamata had said permission would be given to only those who had been organising marches with arms for at least a decade.

"Did Lord Rama ask anybody to rally with arms and swords?"

"Some over enthusiastic miscreants are roaming around with weapons". This is not Bengal's culture. She was booked under sections 144 (unlawful assembly with deadly weapon), 153A (attempts to promote disharmony or feelings of enmity between different religion), 186-188 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and the Arms Act. "I will not tolerate this", she said at a meeting at Pailan, near here, adding that action would be taken against the police if they failed to take measures in this regard. "The law will take its own course". Nobody should be spared. The chief minister also instructed the SPs of all districts to take appropriate action.

After Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo declared that the Rajya Sabha poll loss would not affect the understanding with Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party, Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "I welcome the views expressed by Mayawati Ji today. He belongs to my family, he is a citizen of my state". No one will be allowed to organise processions in the area of another community and murder a person, she said.

With state BJP president Dilip Ghosh openly brandishing arms while attending Ram Navami celebrations, Mamata said, only "one party" had marred an otherwise peaceful celebration in the state. "We celebrate all kinds of festivals and rituals starting from Durga Puja to Ramadan and Christmas but always maintain peace and harmony", she claimed. Now, the government is taking action against us after cleverly embroiling our names into violence organised by the ruling party.

Meanwhile, a case was registered against BJP West Bengal Mahila Morcha president Locket Chatterjee for allegedly participating in an armed Ram Navami procession on Sunday. "I am sorry to say", she said.
