Accusation of Putin role in poisoning is shocking

Elizaveta Peskova's Instagram post gathered a lot of comments

Moscow wanted to "simultaneously deny it and at the same time to glory in it", he said, adding the nerve agent was chosen "to show that it is Russia".

Noting the gravity of the incident as the first use of such a feared class of chemical weapon since they were tested by the Nazis on concentration camp prisoners, the joint statement said: "It is an assault on United Kingdom sovereignty and any such use by a State party is a clear violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and a breach of global law".

The spokesman said the US's National Security Strategy lays out ways to counteract Russian cyberthreats and election meddling and noted that the National Security Council has had a meeting on the subject.

He told the BBC a sample of the nerve agent would be sent to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons - the independent global body set up to stop chemical warfare - for analysis. Both remain hospitalized in serious condition after they were found slumped on a bench in the city of Salisbury in southern England.

Mr Corbyn said that Mrs May was right on Monday to identify two possibilities for the source of the nerve agent - either Russian Federation authorised the attack or had lost control of the Novichok substance. "We will not tolerate the threat to life of British people and others on British soil from the Russian Government", she told legislators this week.

The new sanctions - against five entities and 19 individuals - come following mounting criticism of President Trump's failure to firmly confront and aggressively counter alleged Russian attacks on allied soil and continued efforts to destabilize USA politics.

Alexander Yakovenko, the Russian ambassador to London, explained why the British authorities are interested in accusing Russia of poisoning former GRU Colonel Sergei Skripal and his daughter. "Britain has huge leverage because of all the Russians with their money here".

Writing in the Guardian he warned against a "new Cold War" of "escalating arms spending, proxy conflicts across the globe and a McCarthyite intolerance of dissent".

She said it would be unusual for Russian Federation to be so "reckless and stupid" as to poison Skripal "knowing what outrage it would cause".

There was, however, little sign last night of Russia or Mr Putin conceding any ground as Britain awaited Moscow's formal response to Mrs May's announcement on Wednesday of measures including the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats.

Mentioning Putin in the context of Sergei Skripal's poisoning "is nothing but shocking and unforgiveable behaviour from the point of view of diplomacy", Peskov said.

May's office said in a statement that she discussed the investigation with France's Macron on Thursday morning.

Heightened tensions between Security Council members was on full display during a speech by Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, who slammed the United Kingdom for leveling "hysterical" and "nontransparent" accusations against Moscow. Last night, Nikki Haley blasted Russian Federation during a UN Security Council meeting for the assassination attack and other aggressive actions, demanding that they cease their offensive operations.

The sanctions, while new from the Treasury Department, do overlap with previous steps taken by the US, including indictments of Russians by Robert Mueller for 2016 election meddling.
