70 homes lost in NSW coastal town bushfire

Emergency warnings were issued for the blazes in the area between Terang and Camperdown and Port Campbell

Cabinet minister Mathias Cormann said the government stood ready to provide assistance to communities who have lost homes, sheds and livestock, their livelihood.

"It was raining fire embers through the township - there were spot fires starting all throughout the streets of the town", he told 2GB Radio.

"'I want everybody to know that we will do everything we can to make it easier for them", Ms Berejiklian said on Monday.

The wildfire, fuelled by strong winds and high temperatures, spread rapidly over an area of 1,070 hectares but the fire service finally managed to control it due to change in weather conditions.

The blaze remains out of control after burning through several kilometres of bushland and crossing a river before reaching Tathra.

Country Fire Authority assistant chief officer Rohan Luke said conditions were extremely hard for firefighters working in the dark, in rough terrain, and with 90km/h winds.

The threat was downgraded late on Sunday night after a southerly change helped ease conditions, but a great deal of damage had already been done.

Communication has been hampered after mobile phone towers collapsed, with Tathra only receiving five per cent of mobile phone coverage on Monday.

Hundreds of residents from the township of 3000 were forced to sleep in a Bega evacuation centre 20km inland, or in their cars.

The destructive blaze destroyed dozens of properties and was one of 26 bush and grass fires burning across the state on Sunday.

"The kids had gone to pick up whatever sort of mementos they could ... but by the time I got home I just had to tell the kids to leave and leave myself", he said.

"This is a very dire and devastating situation for all involved", a post on the park's Facebook page said.

Tathra resident Janet Lewis said she first heard of the emergency when police drove past yelling "evacuate!" out of a megaphone.

Temperatures in and around Bega hit 38C yesterday.

Tathra Public School, Bega High School, Tanja Public School and Bournda Environmental Education Centre will all be closed on Monday.

The Premier also confirmed that investigations have begun into the cause of the Victorian fires, with natural causes being a likely cause.

"If you are in Tathra, seek shelter if the fire impacts. So that will occur throughout today", Mr Best said.

Corangamite Shire Mayor Jo Beard, whose council covers the Cobden area, said residents and farmers were trying to be fearless as they waited to hear the extent of the damage. "There's still a lot of fire around the landscape", he said, adding it would be at least several days before they were extinguished.

It's believed not all of the homes destroyed were occupied.

The fires affected at least 40,000 hectares and were probably sparked by lightning on Saturday, according to officials.
