Kelly Admits Missteps With White House Aides' Clearances

Former White House aide Rob Porter resigned from role as Staff Secretary on February 7 after allegations of domestic abuse were brought to light by his two ex-wives

The chief of staff states that a "number of reforms have already been implemented", but does not offer a timeline of when some of these changes have been made, such as requiring all security clearances to be approved by his office and having the Personnel Security Office make a "suitability determination before being on-boarded and granted access to the White House complex".

This came shortly after former White House staff secretary Rob Porter resigned his post following allegations of spousal abuse.

Kelly listens as Trump, in background, participates in a roundtable at the Customs and Border Protection National Targeting Center in Reston, Va., Friday, Feb. 2, 2018.

. Facing a credibility crisis of his own, Kelly sought to rewrite his actions, telling staff he had acted more swiftly than widely believed to obtain Porter's resignation. Furthermore, Kelly said, the Federal Bureau of Investigation official who delivers these files should "verbally brief the White House Counsel on any information in those files they deem to be significantly derogatory".

The White House Security Office is tasked with making a final assessment of the findings of an FBI background investigation. Kelly has told reporters he views his top job functions not as managing a likely unmanageable president, but controlling the process by which Trump makes decisions - including the information flow - and managing the West Wing staff.

But in a statement to the Post, Kushner's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said Kelly's memo "will not affect Mr. Kushner's ability to continue to do the very important work he has been assigned by the president". Porter was allowed to remain in one of the most sensitive posts there despite the F.B.I.'s discovery of the abuse allegations months ago.

The White House has been reeling for more than a week amid shifting explanations of how Mr. Rollins said the White House has been receptive to TPPF's ideas on the issue, and the think tank recently added staff in D.C. to work specifically on criminal justice.

Since Kelly knew about the allegations, the White House's internal processes were questioned by critics and allies alike.

Despite White House assertions otherwise, none of this is normal - either how long someone as high-level as Kushner has been able to keep their temporary clearance, or how long it has taken to do the background checks across the White House, according to experts on the subject. For instance, House Oversight Chairman Trey Gowdy announced this week he is launching a probe into the matter.

As of November, Ivanka Trump didn't have a permanent security clearance.

We request answers to these questions as soon as possible. Several high-profile senior aides, despite working at the Trump White House for months, have still not been granted full security clearances, with senior officials unable to clearly explain why, beyond vague lines about a backlog.

The Office of American Innovation, created by President Donald Trump last March, is run by the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner. Any interim top-secret clearance for people with pending investigations or adjudications since June 1, 2017 or before will be discontinued.

Limit access to some highly classified information for those with interim clearance status, without his explicit approval. He also ended in September the practice of granting new interim security clearances "absent extraordinary circumstances" and his signoff, and directed a review of pending security clearance applications.

Have a goal of receiving a briefing about any "significant derogatory information about senior staff" within 48 hours of discovering it.
