Elon Musk: The man who launched a auto towards Mars

A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket lifts off from historic launch pad 39-A at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral Fla. Feb. 6 2018

And Musk said the company would turn a profit during 2018.

The 23-story-tall jumbo rocket, carrying a cherry red Tesla Roadster from the assembly line of Mr Musk's electric vehicle company as a mock payload, thundered off its launchpad in billowing clouds of steam and rocket exhaust at 3.45pm from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, where moon missions once began.

A mannequin dressed in a "real deal" SpaceX spacesuit - dubbed "Starman" by Musk - is strapped in behind the car's wheel.

Experts said the launch would likely catch the eye of the USA space agency NASA, which may consider using the Falcon Heavy as a way to fast-track its plans to reach the Moon again for the first time since 1972.

Musk drummed up buzz for the event on Twitter.

His overriding goal is to establish a city on Mars, sending people there in a flotilla of SpaceX spaceships launched by colossal SpaceX rockets.

The shuttle is well on its way to Mars now.

He announced past year he planned to put his auto on the inaugural Falcon Heavy flight.

Virgin Galactic, the space company founded by Richard Branson, and Jeffrey P. Bezos' Blue Origin also could fly humans for the first time this year, on suborbital jaunts that could reach the edge of space.

The world's most powerful rocket, SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, blasted off Tuesday on its highly anticipated maiden test flight, carrying CEO Elon Musk's cherry red Tesla roadster to an orbit near Mars. The effect is incomparable - seeing an actual vehicle with a spacesuited mannequin in the driver's seat circling Earth.

Tesla said on Wednesday it was sticking with chief executive Elon Musk's revised production targets for its Model 3 saloon, cheering investors who have put up with two delays, but the electric automaker's plans to raise spending this year underscored its growing need for cash.

SpaceX subsequently suffered a couple wildly expensive satellite-launch failures.

SpaceX is competing with Boeing to be the first to send Americans into orbit from US soil again, something that hasn't happened since NASA's last shuttle flight.

With lift-off, the Heavy became the most powerful rocket in use today, doubling the take-off punch of its closest competitor. "It's just a matter of time", he said.

Of course, the cargo on the rocket's inaugural flight was pretty unique, with Musk deciding that rather than sending it up empty, he would strap in a Tesla Roadster auto - emblazoned with the words 'Don't Panic!' on its dashboard - with a spacesuit-wearing manikin dubbed Starman on board.

Such performance is slightly more than double that of the world's next most powerful rocket, the Delta IV Heavy - but at one third of the cost, says Mr Musk.

Florida's space coast roared to life on Tuesday as SpaceX fired off its long-in-development Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center. The Falcon Heavy is price-listed at $90 million, a bargain in the business of rockets. "This is a revolution", Robert Zubrin said in a statement.

But the Falcon Heavy test drive wasn't a complete success, and SpaceX has to fix two major problems.

He also confirmed the rocket will have a 'max thrust at lift-off is 5.1 million pounds or 2300 metric tons, ' adding the first mission will run at 92 per cent capacity. "So we kind of tabled the Crew Dragon on Falcon Heavy and focusing our energies on BFR".

In an unlisted stream of the launch, an announcer was heard saying 'We lost the centre core'.
