World reacts positively to Ardern's news

"It will be the same when Jacinda takes her child to work into the New Zealand parliament for the first time - except for Jacinda will have the world's attention, which will be a wonderful thing for women everywhere".

"As is the case when I am overseas, Mr Peters will act as prime minister, working with my office while staying in touch with me", Ardern said in a statement reported by the New Zealand Herald on Friday.

"I fully intend to be contactable and available throughout the six-week period when needed", she said.

New Zealand's Prime Minister had a surprise announcement for her electorate earlier today: she's pregnant.

Ardern said she discovered her pregnancy only six days before learning she would be prime minister, and it was "100 per cent a surprise".

Ardern's Labour Party came second in September's election, where no party was able to secure a majority.

Ardern said morning sickness began for her on the day she was sworn in as PM, and had made it hard to keep the secret.

In congratulating the pair yesterday and wishing them every joy, Peters said: "Ours is a novel coalition in many respects and the Prime Minister's announcement only reinforces its unique qualities".

"I am not the first woman to multi-task".

Gayford would be a "stay-at-home" dad, she added. "Knowing that so many parents juggle the care of their new babies, we consider ourselves to be very lucky", she said.

If the baby does arrive in June, Ardern can potentially take leave after the Budget and, even if she needs a bit more time, be back on deck before the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting and Apec in November.

"For other women, it is totally unacceptable in 2017 to say that women should have to answer that question in the workplace", Ardern said to Richardson. Now the politician has announced her pregnancy, making her the first world leader since 1990 to give birth while serving in office.
