Why You Won't See Black Lightning on The CW's Other DC Shows

The CW Debuts a New Black Lightning Clip

A middle-aged guy who's just trying to do a good job as an educator and as the single-dad of two daughters, Jefferson hasn't been Black Lightning for nearly a decade - the superhero life contributed to the end of his marriage, and Jefferson wanted to retire from busting criminal heads. Here's what he told us about landing the role of dad, principal, and superhero Jefferson Pierce. A high school principal with two teenage daughters and an ex-wife, he just also happens to be a crime-fighting force to be reckoned with. or at least he was.

Adding to the ambiguity and complexity of the show's depiction of racial issues, conflicts and differences, the violent chieftain of the local gang is African-American, but it turns out he has a boss over him as well. The series takes on some serious issues and it's exciting that the Akils will be addressing them while still accessing the superhero aspects of the show as well. As you start to peel back the layers, the DC outing becomes a breath of fresh air, delivering a laudable injection of diversity and real-world drama. The show makes great use of light and dark visuals and vividly brings Jefferson's powers to life.

"I've been pinching myself".

Pierce, played by Cress Williams, is driving his daughters home when the police pull them over and force him out of his auto because he fits the description of a robber - which is to say, he's a black man.

"We are the first black superhero family to be on network TV, so it's a part of history", Williams says. That's a fact "Black Lightning" takes head on in a way that no other CW show does, despite their talented black actors. "His family is what brought him out of retirement and what forced him to come back". Black Lightning by necessity has a slightly different tone than most of the other shows on the network, and the first chance to see how it manages that will be the premiere tonight. "I believe that family of lesbian and gay teenagers need to see that, if they're struggling with accepting their child's sexuality". Who will they "serve justice" to in the series premiere? Now, his daughters are realizing they have super powers of their own and embrace them to become Thunder (Anissa) and Lightning (Jennifer).

Also, you can like CarterMatt on Facebook if you want to score more updates regarding Black Lightning right away. Christine Adams plays Lynn Pierce, who had a small role to play in Jefferson's decision to retire as Black Lightning; faced with an ultimatum from Lynn, he promised to hang up his suit for good. "There are a lot of similarities, but I think what we did with the characters, as Tony has said, is singularly my vision". Pierce isn't the arrogant, fresh-faced teenager who's just discovered his powers and aims to show them off every chance he gets.

While speaking on the topic, showrunners Salim and Mara Brock Akil referenced Atlanta's sex trafficking reputation and Chicago's unsettling weekend record of almost 125 shootings. For that matter, neither could we.

Black Lightning is set to premiere today at 9/8c on The CW.
