White House briefing on potential government shutdown

Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday to search for ways to avert a US government shutdown, but Schumer said afterward that disagreements remained as the clock ticks toward a midnight deadline to pass a funding bill.

Trump said the meeting was "excellent" and that efforts were continuing.

Meanwhile, with some last-minute White House maneuvers underway on Friday, there's a chance Trump will cave to public pressure and leave Republicans in the lurch.

"I don't know whether we're close to an agreement or far from agreement, but either way this makes sense to keep the government funded and require us to continue negotiations until we reach a conclusion", Moran said.

"We made some progress, but we still have a good number of disagreements", Schumer told reporters after the meeting with President Trump.

It's a stretch, at best, to think the military would bear the brunt of a partial government shutdown, as President Donald Trump asserted Thursday at the Pentagon.

Schumer did not address reporters as he left the building.

Schumer described Trump as "like a Sphinx on this issue", a sentiment Republicans also appeared to share.

With the clock ticking down to a potential government shutdown, the White House on Friday sought to put the spotlight on Democrats.

The House is slated to vote on a short-term spending bill later today, though the outcome is still uncertain.

The standoff also forced Mr Trump to cancel his planned departure on Air Force One to Mar-a-Lago on Friday afternoon.

For the GOP, it's déjà vu, since independent voters overwhelmingly blamed Republicans for government shutdowns in 1996 and 2013. Someone goes into your house, takes your wife and children hostage, and then says, 'Let's negotiate over the price of your house.' He went on to say, 'We could say 'We're shutting down the government, we're not gonna raise the debt ceiling, until you pass immigration reform.' It would be governmental chaos.' End quote.

But Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell shot down that plan on Friday.

The Kentucky Republican says Senate Democrats will "own" the shutdown because they oppose a stopgap spending bill to keep the government open for a month. Six centrist Democrats ultimately voted in favor, but not until after it was clear the bill would pass.

The Trump administration is minimizing the looming budget crisis that could produce a government shutdown, saying former President Barack Obama "weaponized" hardcore negotiating tactics.

Congress is now only hours away before the government could shut down. But he said that, if one does happen, the impact will be less severe than in 2013.

He says, "they chose to make it worse".

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said he was ratcheting up the likelihood of a government shutdown from 30 percent to a 50-50 possibility.

Whether they work through a partial shutdown or not, federal workers can't get paid during a lapse in funding.

Still, officials said the president has been working the phones trying to avert a shutdown.

The White House remains optimistic the stopgap measure will pass. But, he added, "we're planning for it as though it's 100 percent".

Congress has been struggling for months to agree on long-term government funding levels but has been sidetracked by a dispute on immigration.

GOP Sen. Thom Tillis said he was open to any solution that prevented a shutdown. "The National Mall is operated by the National Park Service and there are many other National Service Park properties throughout Washington, DC. we will step in and ensure litter and trash are picked up along the National Mall to keep nation's front yard clean of debris".

President Donald Trump will not leave for a weekend at his Palm Beach estate unless a government shutdown is averted.

Republicans in the House of Representatives have passed a stopgap measure that would fund the United States government for four weeks, known as a "continuing resolution", or CR.

"Democrats are needed if it is to pass in the Senate - but they want illegal immigration and weak borders".

He adds: "Shutdown coming?" Republicans only control 51 seats, so GOP leaders need Democratic votes to cross that threshold. Nearly two-thirds (63%) say dealing with the program should be an extremely or very high priority for Congress, narrowly ahead of the 61% who say the same about passing a long-term funding bill to avoid future shutdowns. Among them: a feeling that Trump's stunning comment in a private meeting last week calling for less immigration from "shithole" countries in Africa has put the onus on Republicans to show sympathy for the "Dreamers" — the roughly 700,000 young people brought to the US illegally as children. And while numerous surveys show the public overwhelmingly supports finding a solution for the young immigrants in the USA illegally, a CNN poll also out Friday shows that 56 percent of Americans say approving a budget agreement to avoid a shutdown is more important than continuing the deportation deferral program.
