What Is 'Tide Pod Challenge'? Latest Social Media Craze Has Doctors Worried

"The 'Tide Pod Challenge" is the latest social media trend you wish you never heard of.

Back in April 2016, a study published in Pediatrics Monday found that there was a rise in the number of children getting their hands on the bright coloured pods and it was having devastating effects on them.

Multiple videos of teens attempting the 'Tide Pod Challenge, ' in which participants put a Tide Pod in their mouths and chew it, are now making the rounds online. The end of the video shows a guy devouring a bowl of laundry pods before he is carted off into an ambulance saying, "I don't regret it".

Dr. Alfred Aleguas Jr., managing director of the Florida Poison Information Center in Tampa, said if someone mimicked the College Humor video, they could find themselves in a "life-threatening" situation.

Health risks posed by detergent packets were brought into the limelight in 2012 when the American Association of Poison Control Centers warned against keeping laundry pods within the reach of children aged five years or younger. In some cases, some of the detergent could even find its way into the lungs and cause breathing difficulties. These are people who are going out and actively going to look for them to ingest them.

"Our laundry pacs are a highly concentrated detergent meant to clean clothes, and they're used safely in millions of households every day".

On their website, Tide recommends consumers to drink a glass of water or milk if they consume one of the laundry pods while contacting emergency services immediately. Parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about it and also keep the Arizona Poison Control number handy- that's 1-800 222-1222.

By 2015, jokes about wanting to consume the pods had become so rampant that even The Onion had to satirize the topic.
