USA may reimpose sanctions on Iran

The president wants Congress to modify a law that reviews USA participation in the nuclear deal to include "trigger points" that, if violated, would lead to the United States reimposing its sanctions, the official said. In terms of signing a waiver later in January, the President hasn't made a final decision on that, ' Sanders said of the sanctions waiver last Tuesday.

European powers have urged the United States not to abandon the 2015 agreement with Iran that limits its nuclear programme, saying it is making the world safer.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

The new deal, the official said, would be permanent and would not begin to expire after a decade as was the case in the 2015 accord. "The smooth implementation of the agreement should be accompanied by a stepped-up dialogue with Iran on its ballistic missile program and its regional policy in order to guarantee greater stability in the Middle East". Instead, I have outlined two possible paths forward: "either fix the deal's disastrous flaws, or the United States will withdraw", the president said in a statement.

ROSS: Well, I do worry that he may feel, particularly at a time when there's been this protests and unrest that reached 80 different cities, that he wants to make a statement that shows he's being tough on Iran and - by walking away from the JCPOA, by reinstituting what were the sanctions taken - lifted because of the deal, he may feel that he is demonstrating that he's being tough. What they can not do is secure for him the concessions that he sees as necessary to make better, properly "America First" policies. Tehran has always denied seeking nuclear arms. "I want to stress that I don't think anybody has so far produced a better alternative as a way of preventing the Iranians from going ahead with the acquisition of its nuclear capability", he said, challenging the deal's opponents to come up with a better solution.

The expected White House position was first reported by the Associated Press.

The deal, negotiated by the Obama administration is centered exclusively on the Iranian's nuclear weapons program.

"This is the last such waiver he will issue", the official said.

However, Iran disagreed with Trump that its long-range ballistic missile program could be sanctioned under the terms of the current deal.

The deadlines for a number of these waivers to be renewed will fall over the coming week, and Trump is obliged to decide whether or not to maintain sanctions relief.

A decision to withhold a waiver would have effectively ended the deal between Iran and the other global signatories.

Trump's decision has been expected since earlier this week. "$200b. since the signing of the [initial draft nuclear deal with Iran in late]... in 2013".

A spokesman for Iran's atomic energy agency said on Wednesday that a reimposition of sanctions by the United States would be a violation of the nuclear deal and added that the Islamic Republic had the capacity to greatly increase its enrichment of uranium.

Trump is likely to pair his decision to renew the concessions to Tehran with new, targeted sanctions on Iranian businesses and people, the American officials said.

Germany, France, Britain and the European Union are "fully aware that Iran's continued compliance [is] conditioned on full compliance by the US", Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned on Twitter following talks in Brussels with his German, French and British counterparts, as well as European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

Echoing Mogherini, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said: "There is no particular reason to disengage in any way from this agreement as Iran has been respecting the provisions of the deal". Ministers recognized the need to do more to boost the economic benefits the deal should bring to Iran. With a looming deadline on Friday over waiving the sanctions, it's unclear what the President will do.
